There are good wasps and there are bad wasps (just like witches). There are two types of wasps –
solitary and social. Solitary wasps are beneficial insects. They are very docile because they have no nest to
defend (they lay their eggs into their prey!). Solitary wasps rarely sting and they eat other harmful insects. It is
the social wasp that most people want to get rid of because they are fearsome, aggressive, stinging and all-
round nasty creatures. They defend their nest with savagry, stinging anything that comes close to their home.
Wasp Nests
Wasp nests should be removed if they are built close to your home or near children’s play
areas. Wasp nests are honeycomb structures that are commonly built in attics, under a roof
peak and corners of protected porches. Wasps will also build underground nests which tend
to be larger. They are often made in holes made by other animals like gophers and ground
hogs. Wasps are relatives of bees and ants and they are a social creature. Wasps will return
to the nest at dusk/early evening. They will sleep during the night and leave the nest the
next morning.
You Can Get Rid of Wasps
Although it can be a dangerous task, you can get rid of wasps. Wasp nests can be above ground or underground.
Find their nest by following the path of bees on their way back to the nest at dusk. Use a projectile poison to attack
aerial nests and a liquid to attack underground nests. Do this at night while wearing heavy protective clothing.
Wasp stings will hurt and may cause allergic reactions. Good luck with remedying your wasp problem!
Attack Above-Ground Nests
There are home remedies that attack wasp nests, but you really want to have confidence in
these techniques. If they fail, you may be the recipient of a fierce wasp strike. Commercial
wasp killers do work and we recommend their use. Projectile sprays are available that will
allow you to squirt poison into above-ground nests from 15-20 feet away. You don’t want to
get much closer to a nest of enraged wasps. Drench the nest, trying to spray into the
opening if you can. Spray at night when the wasps are sleeping in their nests. Be sure that
you have an escape route in case the wasps come at you.
Treating Stings
Get ready for a two-person commando raid if you
are getting rid of wasps in a ground nest. You can
purchase liquid products online or in garden centers
or you can use kerosene or diesel (not gasoline).
Wear multi-layered, heavy protective clothing and
be ready to run. Approach the underground wasp
nest very, very, very carefully at night time. Pour
the wasp killer into the hole, cover the hole with a
wet towel or cloth, then run like the dickens.
Underground nests are particularly difficult to get rid
of. A professional should be called if the wasp
problem becomes dangerous.
Get Rid of Wasps
Find the Nest
The best way to get rid of wasps is to
attack their nest at night. Wasps will be in
their nests and will be more docile at this
time. Find their nest by looking for bee
traffic during the early evening hours as
the wasps make their way back home. A
keen eye will see the well-termed
“beeline.”

the entire colony. .
Wasps will aggressively sting anything
that it sees as a threat to their nest. They
do not have a barbed stinger so they can
bite several times. They eject a poison
into your skin that will burn and hurt.
Other wasps are often drawn to an attack
area and may join in. Some people are
allergic to wasp stings and may cause
breathing difficulties and shock. You
should see a doctor immediately if you
