Get Rid of Ticks
Ticks, like vampires, suck your blood. These eight-legged parasites feast on the blood of mammals, reptiles,
amphibians and birds. They will drink the blood of humans and their pets. Ticks spread a number of diseases, the
most serious being Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Ticks burrow into exposed, dark, damp
areas of your body. They like armpits, the backs of your knees and the groin area. It is important to get rid of
ticks as soon as you see them. They are a serious health hazard.
The Correct Way to Remove a Tick
There is only one correct way to remove a tick from yourself or your pet.
You may have heard several home-remedy methods for removing ticks – burn
them off, place salt or alcohol on them, rub petroleum jelly on them. These are the bad,
bad, bad. Yes, the tick will die. But in the process the tick will become stressed and release
it’s toxins into your bloodstream. The correct way to remove a tick is to grasp it firmly with
tweezers as close as possible to your skin, then slowly and firmly pull the tick out without
twisting. The trick is to remove the entire tick without leaving any of its body (again,
releasing toxins). Flush the tick down a drain or toilet. Do not crush the tick with your
fingers (remember those toxins!)
Dress Like A Dork
Wearing long pants and long-sleeved
shirts will make it hard for ticks to attach
themselves directly to your skin. They may
first attach themselves to your clothing, so
wearing light colors will make them more
visible to you. A good trick is to tuck your
pant legs into your socks.
Cut Your Grass
Ticks live in high grass. They sit at the top of a blade of grass and wait for something to
brush against it. They will burrow into whatever touches it, be it your leg or your pet.
Keeping your grass short will discourage ticks from living on your lawn. You should also avoid
walking through high grass. You won’t see the ticks sitting on the blade of grass because
they are very small. Ticks become larger only after engorging themselves on your blood.
DEET and Permethrin
Let’s face it, DEET is a wonderful thing. It
smells bad and it makes you feel oily, but it
works. There are a number of products
containing DEET. Popular brands are Off
and Cutter. Spray all your exposed skin
areas (rub carefully around your face).
DEET needs to be applied frequently
because it does not last very long. You may
want to use a permethrin insecticide if you
will be exposed to tick infested areas for a
long time. Permanone and Duranon
Citronella
Skin-so-Soft sells a full line of repellents
based on citronella oil. Some people swear
by it while others think it is ineffective. It’s
products.
Your Pets and Children
Your pets and kids are very likely to frolic in tall grass so you should frequently check
your them for ticks. Look in their hair, around their necks and ears, armpits and the backs
of their knees and be sure to get rid of the ticks using tweezers, making sure to remove
the entire tick.
There are a number of popular remedies to get rid of ticks on your pets. Concerns
about their affects on dog and cat health have surfaced in the past few years, so be very
careful when applying these sprays and ointments. Always follow the label directions and
watch your pet for any adverse conditions.
You Can Get Rid of Ticks
Ticks are a real nuisance. These parasites suck your blood and the blood of your pets, and they carry diseases – notably
Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. You can reduce the chances of getting ticks by keeping your grass short
and staying away from areas with long grass. Wearing light clothing with long pants and sleeves will make it hard to ticks
to attach themselves to you. DEET and citronella products are useful in getting rid of ticks. You should carefully monitor
yourself, your children and your pets for the presence of ticks. If you find ticks, remove them slowly and firmly with
tweezers. Now, go out and have a treat time!
