Carpenter bees look like bumble bees.
Carpenter bees are one of the easiest insects to get rid of.  But before you can rid your house
of these pesky creatures, you need to know what to look for.
What Is Making Those
Perfectly Round Holes?
Carpenter bees will bore into wood to make their nests.  They
have the amazing ability to make perfectly round holes.  Carpenter bees will usually make
their nests in untreated, unpainted wood surfaces.  A telltale sign of carpenter bee
infestations is a mound of sawdust directly beneath their hole.
Is a Carpenter Bee a Bumble Bee?
A carpenter bee is not a bumble bee.  They are approximately the size size, but a
bumble bee has a yellow abdomen.  A carpenter bee is mostly black.  Male carpenter
bees do not have a stinger.  They may buzz closely to your body, but this is their way of
protecting their territory.  They will not sting you.  The female carpenter bee does have a
stinger, but is ususally very docile.
The Easy Way to Get Rid
of Carpenter Bees
Duct tape.  As soon as you see the perfectly
round bore of a carpenter bee, cover it with
duct tape.  Putty works too, but it’s always
important to add to the lists of things that
duct tape does so well.

What Damage Will a
Carpenter Bee Cause?
Very little, in most cases.  Unlike termites,
carpenter bees very rarely cause
widespread damage that could endanger
your home.  They can, however, ruin
outdoor decks and furniture like porch
swings and chairs.

You could also use store bought products that kill bees.  The trouble with this solution is
that capenter bees are solitary insects.  They do not have a large hive which is easily
sprayed.  You may also consider placing a tacky substance (there are products designed for
this purpose) that will trap the carpenter bee.

You Can Get Rid of Carpenter Bees
Carpenter bees are among the easiest pests to control and eradicate.  They are not
dangerous and cause very little structural damage.  They can, however, cause aesthetic
damage by boring perfectly circular holes in untreated wood products.  Carpenter bee
holes are easily noticed because there will be wood shavings directly below the damaged
area.  The easiest way to control carpenter bees is to simply cover their hole with duct
tape or putty.  Good luck in your efforts to thwart the carpenter bee!
