Here’s an amazing fact about beetles. 25% of all known life forms are beetles. Beetles
are the group of insects with the most species. 40% of all insects are, you guessed it, beetles.
New species are being discovered every day. Simply put, there are lots and lots of beetles out
there. Some of them are beneficial, others not so much! So do you really want to get rid of
beetles? How can you tell the good beetles from the bad beetles? What’s a beetle infested
homeowner to do?
Beetle Identification
Milky spore is a live bacteria that naturally
and organically kills beetle grubs. It has
become very popular in recent years for
Japanese beetle control. The bacteria infect
the grubs and are passed on to the entire
beetle community. Milky Spore is
completely safe for children and pets and is
environmentally friendly. It also provides a
wonderful beetle defense for up to ten
years because the bacteria live and grow.
You Can Get Rid of Beetles
There are more beetles in the world than any other
living thing. It is important to know what type of
beetle you have before you consider how to get rid of
the beetles. Different beetles require different pest
control strategies. Many beetles are beneficial and
you will not want to eradicate them. Conduct a
thorough image search to learn what type of beetle
you are engaging. Some common beetle control
techniques use Milky Spore, insecticidal soaps and
good old fashioned vacuuming. Beetle traps are not
recommended. Good luck in your beetle battle.
Milky Spore
There are 5-8 million beetle species so how do
you know which one is swarming your trees,
gardens and house? Well, you can narrow things
down to beetles known to be prevalent in your
area. The most common North American beetles
are Japanese Beetles, Asian Beetles (often mistaken
for lady bugs), Flea Beetles, Carpet beetles and Bark Beetles. You will need to
capture one and do a comparison with results from a quick google image search.
A trained garden center professional will be able to quickly identify local beetles
and prescribe an appropriate treatment.

A Word about Traps
Beetle traps dot the suburban
landscape every summer. There can
be no argument that these traps do
entice beetles and effectively capture
them, but there is a downside. Not
only will you be capturing beetles
from your own yard, but you will also
be collecting beetles from your entire
neighborhood. There are better ways
to get rid of beetles than to invite
them over to your home. If you really
want to use a beetle trap never place
it near your garden. You will be sorry.
There are almost as many beetle remedies as there are beetles and it would
be foolhardy to enumerate all of them. A few common solutions are insecticidal
soap, milky spore and some good old fashioned cleaning. But, as mentioned
before, you should verify the type of beetle you have before starting treatment.
Beetle Control
You can make your own insecticidal soap or buy premixed solutions. Fill an
empty spray bottle with a simple mixture of castille soap and water and spray
the offensive beetles. No damage will occur to your plants but the beetles and
other insects will be killed. Again, make sure your beetle is not beneficial before
taking action.
Insecticidal Soaps
A good vacuum may be all you need
when beetles swarm in your house.
Most beetles are docile and rather
slow movers and fliers. It is fairly
simple to suck up the little critters.
You can easily dispose of beetles by
drowning them in a bucket of soapy
water.
