Aphid
Aphids are one of the most common gardening pests.  These insects will eat your plants and destroy your
garden if you do not get rid of them quickly.  Aphids come in a variety of colors – green, black, red, yellow.  They
also vary in size, from 1-10 millimeters.  Their telltale feature are a pear-shaped body and small tubular rideges
on their back. Aphids will pierce your plants and suck the life out of them.  Luckily, there are several easy ways to
get rid of aphids.
The Fun Way to Get Rid of Aphidsd
Ladybugs eat aphids.  Ladybugs can be purchased online and in most home and garden
centers.  They come in little packets.  It is important to time your ladybug release for it to be
effective.  Release the ladybugs after sunset and when rain is not in the forecast for at least
two days.  Ladybugs are very useful garden creatures and this is a fun and interesting way to
solve your aphid problem.
Squishing Aphids
If hosing doesn’t work, you can simply
pluck aphids off your plants and squish
them.  Aphids are docile and slow.  Picking
off aphids is easy work.  However, it is a
bit messy (with the squishing and all) and
it can be mind-numbing.
Hose Aphids Off Your Plants
Can it be this easy?  Yes, it can!  Spraying water on aphids will work in many cases.  Spray
hard enough to knock the aphids off you plants, but not hard enough to harm the plant.
Once an aphid has been knocked to the ground with a stream of water, it will be
hard-pressed to climb back up.  You may need to hose a few times a day for several days, but
spraying with water is the easiest, cleanest way to rid yourself of aphids.
Watch Your Garden
Keep a close eye on your plants.  Aphids
tend to latch onto the back of leaves so
inspect carefully.  Getting rid of aphids
quickly is important because one aphid can
produce 80 offspring in 5-7 days and can
repeat this several times.  Aphids love new
growth so check new shoots and leaves
frequently.

Home Made Sprays
It is so easy to make a home made spray
to get rid of aphids.  Add a couple of
teaspoons of oil and dishwashing
detergent to water in a spray bottle.  Any
kind of oil will do and no special detergent
is needed.  Shake it up and spray your
plants.  The slight film will suffocate the
aphids.
There are many insecticides which will effectively get rid of aphids.  Insect Growth
Regulators (IGRs) act in a number of ways to stop the natural growth of aphids.  Some IRGs
prevent the aphids from reaching the age of reproduction while others disrupt the growh of
the aphid’s exoskeleton.  Azatin, Enstar 2 Neemasad, Neemix and Preclude are all effective.
Pyretherin insectidcides such as Pyola, Schultz and Safer are also very effective.  Be very
careful to follow the directions very carefully because the insecticides may be harmful to your
plants in some instances.

Don’t Overfertilize
Too much fertilizer will actually make your plants more attractive to aphids.
Never fertilize more than the directions recommend.
You Can Get Rid Of Aphids
Although they are a very common garden pest, you can get rid of aphids very simply and
inexpensively.  The most fun way is to release ladybugs on the aphids.  The easiest way to get
rid of aphids is to spray them off your plants.  You can also pluck them off by hand, administer
an easily-made home made spray, or buy commercially available insecticides.
